| Candles blamed in Forest Grove blaze
FOREST GROVE - Investigators say unattended candles are the source of a fire that caused about $5,000 damage to a Forest Grove apartment Monday night. Forest Grove Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the apartment at 2007 21st Ave. at about 9:10 p.m., arriving less than a minute later, said FGF&R spokesperson Dave Nemeyer. Crews found light smoke coming from an apartment located behind Maggie's Buns restaurant. Firefighters quickly extinguished flames coming from the closet of one of the bedrooms. Investigators say several burning candles placed in an empty ice cream container caught the container on fire. The flames leaped to drapes hung over the door of the closet, then spread into the closet and onto the bedroom walls.
Be safe when dealing with a power failure
— Only use battery-powered light, like a flashlight, for emergency lighting. Due to the extreme risk of fire, do not use candles during a power outage.— Turn off electrical equipment you were using when the power went out.— To keep perishable food cold, avoid opening the refrigerator and freezer.— Do not run a generator inside a confined space, like a home or garage, due to the extreme danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.— If you use a generator, connect the equipment you want to power directly to the outlets on the generator. Do not connect a generator to a home's electrical system unless you have an approved power transfer switch installed.— Listen to local radio for updated information.— If possible, check on neighbors who are elderly or may need assistance. Before a blackout happens— Obtain or assemble essential supplies in a central location.
This old thing? I've had it for ages...
Generally I go shopping once a week, I have to buy something every week. I'm just addicted to shopping, I buy everything - clothes, shoes, accessories. If something new comes in I just want to have it. It's mostly fashion although when I moved I bought lots of candles, lights, things for the home. When I go on a shopping trip if I'm not looking for something in particular I can spend between £150 and £200. In the summer when I was working and living at home I spent at least half of what I earned on shopping. .
Candle causes home fire
An unattended candle has been blamed for a fire that damaged a home about 8:30 a.m. today about three miles east of Lawrence. Eudora Township Fire Chief Barry Larson says no one was hurt in the blaze -- and three or four people had vacated the home at 1555 E. 1850 Rd. by the time crews arrived. One room in the basement suffered heavy fire damage, and the ground floor has heavy smoke damage, according to Larson. Larson says crews from Eudora Township, Wakarusa Township and the City of Eudora responded to the fire -- which was brought under control around 9:30 a.m. Larson estimates damage at $30-40,000.
